B-Girl Raygun takes the top spot in world breakdancing rankings, despite Olympic controversy. Find out why she's still number one!

Australiaโ€™s own B-Girl Raygun, aka Rachael Gunn, just keeps hopping to the top, despite some serious Olympic shade.

Remember her infamous kangaroo-inspired breakdancing routine? It didnโ€™t score her any points with the judges in Paris, but it did make her the number one female breakdancer on the planet.

Yeah, you heard that right.

The World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) dropped a statement clarifying how Raygun secured that top spot. And no, it wasnโ€™t based on her zero-point Olympic performance that lit up the internet with critics.

The rankings come from each dancerโ€™s top four performances over the past 12 months, and Olympic events donโ€™t even count! So, despite her viral performance at the Paris Games, her win at the Oceania continental championships last October gave her the 1,000 points that shot her straight to the top.

Even though Japanโ€™s B-Girl Riko racked up the same points from a victory at the Breaking for Gold World Series in Hong Kong, Raygunโ€™s triumph takes precedence under the WDSFโ€™s rules.

Thatโ€™s the official explanation for why sheโ€™s number one right now, but donโ€™t get too comfy - those rankings are expected to shake up after more events roll out, starting with the Breaking for Gold World Series in Shanghai this October.

Meanwhile, critics like Zack Slusser, the VP of Breaking for Gold USA, arenโ€™t exactly fans of how the WDSF has handled rankings, calling them out for not organizing enough events to get a clearer picture of the worldโ€™s best. But hey, rules are rules, and for now, Raygun reigns supreme.

After the Olympic backlash, Raygun, a Sydney-based university lecturer, didnโ€™t hold back her disappointment. โ€œIt was really sad how much hate that it did evoke,โ€ she said. Still, she stands by her title as Australiaโ€™s top B-girl, pointing out her record of being the countryโ€™s best in 2020, 2022, and 2023.

For now, it looks like Raygunโ€™s stepping back from competitions, telling The Project sheโ€™s taking a break from the scene for a while - though with a track record like hers, who needs a rush?
